Revision to Fabricated Equipment Procedures - Effective Immediately
MEMORANDUM |
TO: | Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs Faculty & Staff |
FROM: | Amitabh Varshney Interim Vice President for Research |
SUBJECT: | Revision to Fabricated Equipment Procedures - Effective Immediately |
Our campus has had a long-standing practice of allowing 0% F&A to be charged on the component parts and other costs of equipment that is fabricated under sponsored projects, that when totaled, are equal to or greater than $5,000 (equivalent to the capital equipment threshold). At times there is a need to build a piece of equipment with customized functionality that does not currently exist. This process of fabricating equipment that cannot be acquired “off the shelf” allows researchers to complete sponsored project requirements effectively.
Periodically, there has been a need to update our campus Procedures to address the costs that are allowable as part of fabricated equipment, and the process to follow to ensure our sponsors have approved the cost and the campus is accounting for the cost appropriately as part of our equipment inventory process. A new Fabricated Equipment Form has been added to assist the departments in the process. As always, these Procedures apply to equipment that the University will use on a sponsored project, and the University retains title to the equipment.
Please see the attached Fabricated Equipment Procedures and Fabricated Equipment Form, that are effective immediately. They can also be found on the Office of Research Administration’s (ORA) website.
If you have any questions regarding the Procedures, please contact Wendy Montgomery, Director of ORA, at wmont@umd.edu.
