SPOTLIGHT SERIES: The NIH Salary Cap

Every year since 1990, through DHHS annual appropriations, Congress has legislatively mandated a provision limiting the direct salary that an individual may receive under grant, cooperative agreement or contract. The “NIH salary cap” applies to more than just NIH funding – it applies to NIH, AHRQ and SAMHSA. The current cap restricts the amount of direct salary to the Executive Level II of the Federal pay scale (FY16=$185,100). With more faculty at or above the salary cap, it is imperative that this funding requirement be strictly adhered to. Please join us to discuss the implications of the salary cap at the proposal stage, how to establish a salary cap "cost share" account, and the implications of salary caps on effort reports and progress reports to NIH.
